About MIKE; The Computer Guy
EDUCATION:
Prior to completing my computer training at Clark University Computer Career Institute in 2002, I attended 3 years of Electronics and Computer Technology at Weymouth Vocational/Technical High School beginning in 1998. Even earlier than that, in the 9th grade, I was part of the American Technology Honor Society at Weymouth Junior High. Since those days, computer technology has, of course, changed significantly. But, with continual research and my aptitude for learning new technology quickly, I've managed to stay current with the ever evolving tech world.

EARLY LIFE:
I've always possessed natural mechanical ability, even as a child. My first phrase was literally, "battery for me?" -- as I held up a non-working toy to my mother. As I grew older, you'd find me taking apart TVs, radios, and other electronics for purposes of learning, fixing, and fun. My first computer, at age 12, was an IBM 286 with DOS, a monochrome screen, and those big 5 1/4 floppy disks -- no Windows, all text based! My tech-savvy uncle taught me the basic commands, gave me some books, and soon enough I was able to navigate my way around the system. A few years later I upgraded to a 486 with Windows 95. I remember riding my bicycle to buy Windows 98 with much anticipation on the day of it's release, at the old CompUSA in Braintree.
In 8th grade, at free reading time, I was studying a computer programming book. By age 17, I wrote a very successful add-on program for America Online. At age 20, I wrote a popup blocker called Popup Chomper (prior to browsers having them built-in), and successfully sold copies on download.com, which is still available today.
WHY CHOOSE ME?
WHAT ABOUT THE LOCAL REPAIR SHOP?
Don't be fooled by the "little guys" at your corner computer store, which I've worked for in the past. They might have what seems to be a lower hourly rate for dropping it off, but my flat on-site rates will most often beat them. Keep in mind, you'll be contributing to their overhead costs involved in owning a storefront. I was a bench tech at a small company years ago who literally never EVER charged anybody the 1 hour minimum. They claimed it "wasn't worth their while" unless the bill was at least an hour and a half or more, even if it took me 30 minutes to fix it!
WHAT ABOUT YOUR ON-SITE COMPETITORS?
I previously worked for a small on-site company that sent out "the new guy" to a customer to fix their computer. He didn't fix it, but instead pretty much made things worse. Then, I was dispatched to correct his mistakes, which I did. The company owner unfairly demanded that the customer pay for both visits, even though the first tech clearly didn't fix anything correctly! I empathized with the customer, who felt as if they were being robbed. But, since it wasn't my company, I pretty much had to bite my tongue.
WHAT ABOUT A BIG WELL-KNOWN COMPANY?
There are plenty of "big" on-site computer companies/franchises. I've worked for them too, and there are a few reasons I'd recommend against them. In a lot of cases you'll have an underpaid, recent graduate with little to no experience dispatched to you. Your tech's lack of experience often leads to them taking 2-3 hours, as opposed to an experienced tech performing the same job in an hour or less. Since most of these companies charge high hourly rates, this common scenario leaves you, of course, with a huge bill. Plus, there's always the risk that they may leave you with more problems than you started with, and still charge you for it. I hear those horror stories far too often. You don't run that risk with me, as I have a "No Fix, No Fee" guarantee, as well as flat rates.
Also, the "big guys" love to charge you extra for utilities and software such as anti-virus / anti-malware -- all of which I include for free. Best Buy's Geek Squad charges $249 (yes, two hundred and forty nine dollars!!) for an in-home spyware/virus cleanup, then another $60+ for antivirus software (which you have to renew annually at $60+/year). You could buy a whole new computer for that kind of money!! Yes, they are making commission via affiliate marketing with that anti-virus company as well, so they will definitely push it as "the best". The same exact job performed by myself would cost a flat rate of $135.
A more advanced repair, such as a data recovery from a damaged hard drive, which may hold your valuable photos/work files/etc., costs a flat rate of $175. If it's severely damaged, I'll get you a quote much lower than Geek Squad. Best Buy charges a $50 non-refundable "diagnostic fee", then an additional $200-$1,450, depending on how severe the damage! WHY CHOOSE ME?
- Needless to say, I've been involved with technology for many years, and I am confident in my abilities to assist you with all of your technical needs.
- I have a "No Fix, No Fee" guarantee, so you literally have nothing to risk.
- I've established a simple, fair, flat-rate pricing scheme with absolutely no surprise fees. Most of my competitors charge a high hourly rate and leave you in the dark about how many hours the job will take, then hit you with "diagnostic fees", travel charges, etc.
- It won't take me a week to have your PC up and running. My motto is, "At your door within 24", and I carry an inventory of parts on-hand, so it's usually fixed on-site that same day.
- Not only am I a competent and certified technician, but I'm also very honest, polite, and fair. Additionally, when a visit isn't required, I'm happy to provide complimentary computer advice and solutions via phone/email/text to my customers at any time!
